Agriculture plays a key role in the economy and development of Pakistan providing food to consumers, raw materials to industry and a market for manufactured goods. Unfortunately, agricultural production is stagnant due to several constraints, which include fixed cultivation practices, reliance on a few staple crops, a narrow genetic pool, poor seed quality, and a changing climate. In addition, high production costs, weak phytosanitary compliance mechanisms and lack of cold chain facilities make Pakistan agriculturally uncompetitive in export markets. Despite all these problems, agriculture is the primary industry in Pakistan and small farmers continue to dominate the business. Smallholder farmers grow subsistence crops according to a fixed cropping pattern and a holistic approach is required for agricultural development to improve the livelihood of the rural population.
This book presents a comprehensive view of agriculture in Pakistan. Chapters provide critical analyzes of current trends, gaps in agriculture, strategic planning, improvement programs and policies, taking into account natural resources, agricultural production technologies related to plants and animals, input supply, population planning, migration and poverty, and balanced policies. on finance, credit, marketing and business.
